In orange hair and maroon prison garb,the suspected gunman in the Century 16 the shootings attended his first court appearance Monday.

24-year-old James Holmes, accused of the Friday incident that left 12 dead and 58 wounded, has been in solitary confinement since his arrest.

Sometimes bleary-eyed, Holmes sat motionless in wrist and ankle shackles, saying nothing during the very brief hearing. Holmes was assigned a public defender.

Outside the courthouse after the hearing, Arapahoe County Dist. Atty. Carol Chambers said to reporters” I would say there’s no such thing as a slamdunk case,” she went on to say” We’re still looking at the enormous amount of evidence.”

Chambers said that a decision will be made after consultation with the victims families as to whether the death penalty will be pursued in this case. It has been suggested that attorneys for Holmes will pursue an insanity plea to side-step that penalty.

Authorities say that Holmes is refusing to cooperate, and so a motive for the horrendous killings is still unknown. Although police now know that Holmes began buying guns at Denver-area stores two months prior to the attacks, and had received at least 50 packages delivered to his home and at school in the past four months.

Holmes had told authorities after his arrest that his home was wired with explosives. Police, FBI officials, and bomb squad technicians spent most of Saturday dismantling all the booby traps containing explosives and unknown liquids in the tripwire infested apartment.
