A Chitina man kayaking on Town Lake near the village drowned while out on the lake Thursday evening.

A call was made to troopers at approximately 9 pm this past Thursday reporting a kayaker in distress and Glennallen troopers, Wildlife Troopers and Chitina EMS responded to the scene.

The caller reported that they had lost sight of the kayaker who was reported by a bystander to be 32-year-old Randy Pedro.

The initial search would turn up Pedro’s kayak and shoes floating in the water but no sign of the victim.

Troopers were told that Pedro had not been wearing a life jacket and was intoxicated at the time of the incident.

The search continued through the night and a dive team would, the next day, find Pedro deceased in the lake.

Pedro’s next of kin were notified of the accident.
