ANCHORAGE, Alaska — The Coast Guard, Alaska State Troopers, Army Corps of Engineers and Anchorage Fire Department rescued three people from a sinking vessel near Fire Island in Cook Inlet near Anchorage Saturday.
The crew of Anchorage Fire Department Boat 1 pulled the three passengers of the 16-foot river boat from the water and took them safely to the Port of Anchorage.
Coast Guard watchstanders at Sector Anchorage received a report of the sinking vessel and its passengers from Alaska State Troopers dispatch and issued an urgent marine information broadcast to mariners in the area. The crew of the Army Corps of Engineers vessel Essayons and the Anchorage Fire Department crews arrived on scene and the fire department crew rescued the passengers and took their vessel into tow. All three passengers were wearing lifejackets.
“This case demonstrates both the value of teamwork with our partner agencies and the importance of wearing a lifejacket whenever you’re underway,” said Cmdr. Shawn Decker, chief of response, Coast Guard Sector Anchorage. “The Coast Guard thanks everyone who responded to this incident and reminds all boaters to exercise safety on the water.”
No injuries were reported and the weather on scene was reported to be calm.
