An 18-month-old girl and her mother were flown to Cold Bay from Unalaska on Monday after the toddler consumed adult medication that was deemed toxic for children.

The request went in to the Coast Guard on Monday afternoon and the mother and her child were transferred at 8:47 pm to a waiting Guardian flight that transported them to Anchorage for further treatment of the child. The guardian flight was unable to access Unalaska because of high winds in that area. A Dolphin helicopter was dispatched from the Cutter Rush to bring the two to the airport in Cold Bay.
“Throughout the year we have our cutters on patrol in the Bering Sea and these cutters often have helicopters deployed on board to increase search and rescue abilities in the region,” said Lt. Robert Baysden, 17th District command duty officer. “The close proximity of the Rush’s deployable helicopter crew allowed us to quickly render assistance which could prove the difference in life or death for the child.”
The toddler was reported in stable condition at the time of transfer.
The 378-foot endurance cutter is homeported in Honolulu.
