JUNEAU, Alaska – A small-boat crew from the Coast Guard Cutter Anacapa rescued a 43-year-old man after he was stranded on the Barrier Islands, 7 miles south of Port Protection, Alaska, Saturday.
The Anacapa crew launched the cutter’s small boat to transfer the man and his dinghy to Port Protection where he had arranged further transportation.
Coast Guard Sector Juneau watchstanders overheard communications between the man and the crew of the Deer Harbor 2, a good Samaritan vessel. The man reported he had experienced engine trouble and his vessel drifted onto rocks and broke apart leaving him stranded, Friday. The crew of the Deer Harbor 2 was unable to assist. Sector Juneau watchstanders diverted the crew of the Anacapa.
“With the information provided from the crew of the Deer Harbor 2and the Alaska State Troopers we were quickly able to respond,” said Petty Officer 3rd Class Michael Florkowski, a Sector Juneau watchstander. “Diverting the crew of the Anacapa, who were patrolling nearby, allowed us to transport the man to safety.”
