KODIAK, Alaska — A Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew rescued a mariner from the grounded sailing vessel Lieveling 209 miles north of Kodiak, Alaska, Monday.
The aircrew landed on the beach nearby to embark the mariner and transport him to Seward with no medical concerns.
Watchstanders from Coast Guard Sector Anchorage received a radio call for assistance from the mariner reporting he was drifting toward the rocks and donning his survival suit. The watchstanders issued an urgent marine information broadcast, diverted the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Mustang, and requested an MH-60 helicopter crew and HC-130 airplane crew from Air Station Kodiak for assistance.
The Mustang and Jayhawk crews arrived on scene and sighted the Leiveling hard aground with the mariner ashore.
“It is important to have a form of communication while on the water in case of emergency,” said Lt. j.g. Dan Hendricks, a Coast Guard 17th District watchstander. “Other safety measures include filing a float plan, maintaining cold-weather gear and having a registered emergency position indicating radio beacon.”
