JUNEAU, Alaska — A Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Sitka rescued three missing hunters 20 miles from Sitka at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday.
The three men, all listed in good condition, left for a weekend hunting trip aboard a 17-foot vessel on Saturday and were reported missing to Coast Guard Sector Juneau watchstanders when they did not show up at work Wednesday morning.
The MH-60 crew was diverted from a routine patrol to conduct a search of the sea and shoreline between Sitka and Sevenfathom Bay, the destination of the hunters. The Coast Guard and Mountain Rescue coordinated a local investigation for the missing men and conducted an extended communications search in Sitka.
The three hunters became stranded at a cabin near Sevenfathom Bay when their vessel, still missing, broke free of its mooring and drifted away.
