SEATTLE — The Coast Guard responded to a boat fire approximately 15 miles southwest of Bellingham, Wash., near Lummi Island, Wash., Saturday.

Coast Guard Sector Puget Sound, located in Seattle, received a report that the 46-foot sailing vessel Straight Up was ablaze just southeast of Lummi Island with seven people on board at approximately 5:15 p.m.

Coast Guard Sector Puget Sound sent Cutter Terrapin, already underway near the San Juan islands, to the scene.

All seven people jumped overboard and were recovered by a good Samaritan boater before Cutter Terrapin arrived.

Cutter Terrapin arrived and launched a rigid hull inflatable vessel crew.

The cutter crew and RHI crew established a security zone around the burning vessel.

The good Samaritan vessel transported the seven people to safety at Anacortes Marina in Anacortes, Wash. No injuries have been reported.

Vessel Assist San Juan has been contracted to salvage the remains of the burned sailing vessel that was reported to contain 25 gallons of diesel fuel.

The official cause of the fire is not known at this time.
