SEWARD HIGHWAY-At about 9:40 pm last night, a call was received at the Soldotna Public Safety Communications Center reporting a head on collision at Mile 13 of the Seward Highway. Alaska State Troopers arrived to find an accident involving two vehicles, a 1993 Chevrolet Suburban, and a 1992 Chevy Pickup.

The driver of the pickup, who was identified as Robert Washburn, age 46 of Seward, was trapped in his truck at the scene. Washburn, who was not wearing a seat belt, was extricated from the vehicle. He had sustained serious injuries. He was transported to Providence Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The investigation revealed that Sarah Brueckner, age 31 of Moose Pass, driving northbound, lost control of her Suburban and crossed the center line, into the southbound lane, impacting Washburn’s truck head on. There were seven children in the Suburban. One passenger, a two year old, suffered minor injuries and was treated at Providence in Seward. There were no other injuries reported.

Washburn’s next of kin were notified and his body was transported to the State Medical Examiner’s office for autopsy.

The Bureau of Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation.
