The shut down of the U.S. Government was averted after the U.S. Congress gave its final approval to a $1 trillion spending plan that will keep the government doors open until September. September 30 is the end of the governments fiscal year.
On Wednesday, the Senate passed the continuing resolution to fund the govermnment for the rest of the fiscal year with a vote of 76-26 to approve. The House followed suit on Thursday, with 203 Repubicans and 115 DDemocrats voting for passage. 27 Republicans and 82 Democrats opposed the resolution. Opposition came from the extreme right and left of the two parties.

House Speaker John Boehner said after passage, “The administration now has to put the sequester in place. They ought to do it in a way that, that doesn’t inconvenience the American people. And they can probably find a way if they want to,” he said.
Just prior to voting on the spending bill, the House passed the 2014 budget authored by Representative Paul Ryan. That budget has deep spending cuts and no tax increases. The Senate’s version is the opposite, calling for tax increases.
President Obama is expected to sign the continuing resolutionl without delay.
