At 1`:26 pm yesterday afternoon, Soldotna Public Safety Communication Center received a report of a crash at the intersection of the Kenai Spur Highway and Lois Drive near milepost 25.
Involved in the crash were three vehicles, a 1998 Kia Sephia, driven by 59-year-old Joyce Riley, a silver 1999 Honda Accord driven by 23-year-old John King, and a 1990 Motor Coach Industries bus driven by 38-year-old Aaron Miller.
According to the investigation, King, driving the Accord, slowed to make the turn at Lois Drive,. Riley was behind King traveling in the same direction, and did not slow as King was making the turn, turned sharply, causing the vehicle to skid and impact the Accord, and the momentum of the Kia caused it to move into the southbound lane in front of the bus driven by Miller where it impacted by the bus.
Joyce riley was pronounced dead at the scene by Nikiski Medics. John King and his front seat passenger reported no injuries. Miller, the driver and only occupant of the bus was transported to Central Peninsula hospital for evaluation with no apparent visible injuries.
That section of the highway was closed and traffic was rerouted through Island Lake Road and Miller’s Loop. Bureau of Highway Patrol conducted Total Station mapping of the scene.
The State Medical Examiner requested Riley’s body be sent to the Examiner’s office for autopsy.
Next of kin has been notified and investigation into the accident continues.
