After a week of unrest, protests, and bloodshed, the President of Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovych, and the three opposition leaders inked a deal to end the political crisis that has engulfed the Ukraine for the last several days.
The signing of the agreement came after all-night negotiations brokered by Germany, Poland and France.
The deal signed on Friday included the setting up of a national unity government, early elections and a return to the 2004 constitution which will give the parliament back previous powers as well as decrease the presidential powers. The Ukrainian parliament voted to restore the old constitution shortly after the signing. They also worked to pass a bill for the release of opposition leader and former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko. She has been imprisoned since 2011.
In the U.S., the White House issued a statement saying, “We support the efforts of all those who negotiated this agreement, commend the courageous opposition leaders who recognized the need for compromise, and offer the support of the United States in its implementation.” The statement continued, saying, “Now, the focus must be on concrete action to implement this agreement, which we will be monitoring closely.”
It is hoped that this latest development will end the largest instance of unrest in the Ukraine since the collapse of the Soviet Union. But, many of the protestors are asking for the immediate stepping-down of President Yanukovych rather than a special election in December. The city square remains filled with protestors not yet ready to go home and quit the fight.
