The death toll of people who fell victim to the toxic cough syrup in Lahore City in Pakistan has risen to 16 from the initial report of 13 earlier.
Authorities in Pakistan say that most, if not all of the victims were drug addicts that were trying to get high off of the over-the-counter drug. The victim’s ages ranged from 15 to 45.
Many of the poisoning victims were found at a local cemetary. Already dead from the cough syrup. The graveyard is a favorite among drug addicts in Lahore, and many go there to do drugs. Another seven of the victims were taken to the hospital, where they later succumbed to the effects of the poison.
Additionally, six other individuals got deathly ill after ingesting the tainted syrup. The six were taken to local hospitals after suffering symptoms of poisoning. Those six have recovered from their close call with death. The six were released from the hospital after treatment.
The chief minister of Punjab Province has ordered an inquiry into the incident and has closed the three drug stores where the tainted syrup was found. The factory where that particular brand of syrup originated from has been shut down as well. The owners of the three drug stores as well as the fatory owner have been arrested. The is no word on exactly what charges they are being held on.
That particular brand of cough syrup has been confiscated from all of the pharmacies in the city. Samples have been sent to laboratories and results are expected within the next 72 hours says Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif.
Lahore is no stranger to faulty or tainted drugs. In January, Lahore was in the spotlight after 40,000 cadiac patients were given a batch of faulty heart medicine. Over one hundred people died in that incident. The victims in that case were poor people who had been given the drugs for free.

The drug in that instance caused death by a rapid depletion of white cells and blood platelets. The victims in that case were misdiagnosed early during the incident. It was thought that the victims were suffering from Dengue Fever which is prevalent during the monsoon season. The mosquito-borne disease was ruled out later when it was found that all of the victims had been administered the faulty heart drug.
Lahore is a city of 10 million people and is the second largest city in the Pakistani province of Punjab. It lies near the eastern border of Pakistan.
