At 10:42 am Monday, a magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck in the middle of the Gulf of Alaska.
The shaker occurred at a depth of 34.3 miles below the ocean floor a8o miles off-shore from Yakutat.

This area has not had a large quake in 24 years. The last earthquake of any magnitude to occur there was in 1988 when a 7.7 magnitude quake struck in the region. The year before that, a 7.8 shook the area.
Although the quake yesterday is on the same quake boundry as the series of earthquakes that occurred in British Colombia in October, it is not directly related to those quakes.
No watch, warning or advisory was issued for yesterday’s quake.
