After a ten month investigation into the murders of 41-year-old U.S. Coast Guard Electrician's Mate First Class James Hopkins and 51-year-old retired Chief Boatswain's Mate Richard Belisle, an arrest has been made in Kodiak.
U.S. Attorney Karen Loeffler announced on Friday that 61-year-old James Michael Wells of Kodiak was arrested in connection with the murders of his fellow workers in the “Rigger’s Shop” on the Air station Kodiak Base. Wells was arrested on a Federal Arrest Warrant based on a Criminal Complaint.
The investigation into the deaths of Hopkins and Belisle was undertaken by the Coast Guard Investigative Service and the Alaska State Troopers led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Wells worked on the Coast Guard base as a civilian employee as did Richard Belisle. Wells lived at Bell’s Flats, located to the southwest of the Coast Guard base.
The two victims were found by another Coast Guard member shortly after arriving to work on April 12, 2012. The murders occurred between 7 am and 8 am that Thursday.
There is no information coming out as to why the investigators zeroed in on Wells as a suspect in the case or what motive Wells may have had for the killings.
Wells is scheduled to be in court for arraignment this coming week. The Alaska Court system shows no criminal record in the state of Alaska for Wells.
