The United States Coast Guard received a call on Sunday from a vessel in distress at 11:35 am.

The call, from the 56-foot fishing vessel “Scandia,” positioned approximately 70 miles to the west of Kodiak, informed the Coast Guard that the vessel was taking on water and the crew was unable to staunch or keep up with the amount of water the vessel was taking on.

The crew donned survival suits and launched a 17-foot skiff into the water and abandoned ship.

An Air Station Kodiak based Jayhawk lifted off and went to the vessels position. At 1:23 pm, the Jayhawk crew hoisted the five crewmembers of the stricken vessel and transported them to Kodiak. There were no injuries or medical concerns reported.

The vessel remains 70 west of the city of Kodiak and is in a partially submerged condition. The vessel had 1,200 gallons of fuel as well as approximately 80 gallons of lube oil on board when she foundered. No oil spills have been detected or reported from the vessel.

The Coast Guard is actively warning vessels in the area via radio alerts to take precautions and to be on the lookout for the partially submerged vessel as it now presents a navigation hazard.

Coast Guard spokesman Michael McCandless states that the crew was well prepared for the incident and their preparedness was vital to their rescue.
