At 10:28 pm Saturday, Alaska State Troopers began receiving several REDDI reports of a vehicle driving recklessly going southbound on the Parks Highway near mile post 62.
Troopers responded and located the vehicle, a 2004 Subaru. Officers then attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle. The vehicle sped up to approximately 80 miles per hour and passed a semi using the shoulder of the highway.
The speeding vehicle then swerved into the opposite lane of traffic.
The driver of the vehicle lost control at milepost 51. He left the highway on the north side of the road, rolled several times and came to rest laying on its driver side and burst into flames.

The driver, now identified as 31-year-old Peter B. Dirks of Soldotna, was checked out by EMS at the scene and found to have sustained no injuries.
Further investigation at the scene found that Dirk was impaired by alcohol and was subsequently arrested.
Dirks was transported to the Mat-Su Pretrial facility on charges of DUI and Failure to Stop at the Direction of a Peace Officer. His bail was set at $7,500.
The vehicle was totaled from the accident and the fire that broke out.
