An indictment against 42-year-old Jonathan H. Smith of Carpenter Labor Union 2247 in Juneau was handed down by a Grand Jury and he was arraigned on charges of Embezzlement on Thursday according to the Justice Department.
Smith is accused of embezzling $40,000 from the union’s coffers while acting as Financial Secretary for the union. The theft took place between April 16th, 2007 and May 8th, 2012. The funds that Smith is accused of embezzling were union dues from members.
He has since been expelled from the Union.
Smith was released on conditions after his arraignment in front of Magistrate Judge Leslie C. Longenbaugh yesterday.
Smith faces a possible sentence of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine with up to 3 years of supervised release if convicted for the offense of embezzlement of union funds.
Special agents with the Department of Labor carried out the investigation against Smith.
LU2247 and its members was absorbed by the Anchorage union about one year ago when its hall shut down on June 3, 2013
