After reaching a plea agreement deal, the 81-year-old former mayor of Ketchikan and the Gateway Borough, Jack Shay was sentenced in Ketchikan Superior Court on Monday.
After pleading guilty to seven counts of possessing child pornography in May, 84 other counts were dropped. Shay was sentenced to 35 years in prison with 18 years suspended on Monday.

Shay was arrested in November after he had brought his computer and his printer into a repair shop and employees found pornography involving children on the machine. He was initially charged with 10 counts and released on a $30,000 bail. Further investigations conducted in Shay’s home discovered more images as well as video and Shay’s bail was re-set at $100,000 and a third party custodian. After his arrest, Shay resigned from his seat on the Ketchikan City Council.
According to prosecutors, Shay also produced some of the pornography himself with an unidentified girl. Two of the charges against Shay stemmed from that video.
Sentenced to 17 years, with good behavior, Shay can be released in 12 years. Shay’s advanced age make it unlikely that he will reach that date however.
