HEADQUARTERS, U.S. ARMY ALASKA, FORT WAINWRIGHT, Alaska – The date and location have been set for the court-martial of a Fort Wainwright soldier who was charged with the April 3 death of his 3-year-old son in the family’s on-post residence here.
Sgt. Nathaniel E. Ulroan, 24, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, will be tried at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash., beginning Nov. 3.
In addition to being charged with the premeditated murder of his son, Sgt. Ulroan is also charged with various crimes stemming from the alleged physical and sexual abuse of his wife during their marriage as well as from the night of April 3. These charges include kidnapping, three specifications of rape, two specifications of aggravated assault, five specifications of assault consummated by battery, simple assault, and communicating a threat. Ulroan, a native of Chevak, Alaska, is currently in pretrial confinement at the Northwest Joint Regional Confinement Facility located at JBLM.
The court-martial was originally scheduled to be held at Fort Wainwright; however, the Government’s prosecutors and Ulroan’s military defense team agreed to move the proceedings to JBLM since the accused, the military judge, members of his defense team, and a primary witness are all located at JBLM.
Ulroan joined the Army in October 2008. After completing Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., he was stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash., before being assigned to Fort Wainwright in December 2012 as a combat engineer.
While at JBLM, Ulroan deployed to Iraq for three months and Afghanistan for 11 months in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.
As with all criminal trials within the United States, Ulroan is considered innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt by a military court. Nothing stated above should be taken to infer guilt.
