After saying "it's pretty clear Governor Romney is going to be the nominee," Republican candidate for the presidency Newt Gingrich unofficially declared he was dropping out of the race.
Speaking to the Gaston County GOP after the primaries on Tuesday, where Romney walked away with all the states voting, Gingrich said “I think obviously that I would be a better candidate, but the objective fact is the voters didn’t think that, and I also think it’s very, very important that we be unified.”
Gingrich campaign chairman Bob Walker announced that an official declaration would be in the offing next week. Of the delay in announcing an end to the campaign, Walker said that the campaign was talking to Romney and the RNC and that, “There are some things to be worked out, which is the reason we’re taking a little bit of time here.”
On Friday, Gingrich stated that the campaign was $4.3 million in debt, he blamed that on trying to compete with Romney in Florida. Gingrich has only won two states in his run for the candidacy of the Republican party, his home state of Georgia and South Carolina. Until Gingrich officially declares that he is dropping out, he will still have the security of the Secret Services, which costs taxpayers roughly $44,000 a day.
