November 15, 2011, Juneau, Alaska – Governor Sean Parnell offered his condolences to the family and friends of two Fort Wainwright soldiers who were killed in separate IED attacks last weekend in the Kandahar province of Afghanistan. Specialist Calvin Matthew Pereda and Sergeant 1st Class Johnathan Bryant McCain were on mounted patrols when the attacks occurred.
“The loss of Specialist Pereda and Sergeant 1st Class McCain is a humbling reminder of the real sacrifices being made by our soldiers and their families,” Governor Parnell said. “Sandy and I join all Alaskans in honoring the bravery of these men. We will keep their families in our thoughts and prayers.”
McCain and Pereda were assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division based at Fort Wainwright.
