(Juneau) – The Alaska House yesterday passed a bill making the DMV registration process more user and wallet-friendly by establishing a new type of permanent registration for older motor vehicles.
House Bill 64, sponsored by House Finance Co-chair Bill Stoltzeand Rep. Wes Keller, proposes allowing municipalities and boroughs to offer the registration for vehicles and trailers that are more than eight years old. The one-time fee would cost $25 in addition to the regular biennial registration fee the local government charges.
“After eight years we’ve gotten enough blood out of the turnip,” Stoltze, R-Chugiak/Mat-Su, said. “This will save Alaskans millions and offer those who choose to take advantage of it the ability to save their time and money, while also not having to worry about losing compliance on some of their older or seasonal vehicles or trailers.”
“As the driver of a squeezed turnip, I’m glad to have a role in passing this bill,” Keller, R-Wasilla, said. “My constituents in the Valley, and other rural Alaskans, have part-time vehicles of age that this will benefit.”
HB 64 now moves to the Alaska Senate for consideration.
