27-year-old 2010/2011 Iron Dog Champion Tyler Huntington was involved in a snow machine accident on Monday afternoon.
Alaska State Troopers were notified at 3:30pm of the high speed crash that occurred three miles north of Shaktoolik. Medical and rescue personnel responded to the scene from Shaktoolik.
According to reports, Huntington was traveling at speeds near 80 mph when he hit a piece of driftwood on the edge of the trail
A medivac was coordinated from the Norton Sound Regional Hospital. Huntington received serious but non-life threatening injuries in the crash.
Huntington was later medevaced to Anchorage to be treated for his injuries. It is reported that Huntington suffered a severe broken pelvis and is suffering from abdominal pain. He is scheduled to undergo surgery tommorrow morning.
Tyler Huntington and Evan Booth were to race in the upcoming Iron Dog race. Huntington has given Booth a “short list” of possible replacements to partner with Booth in the upcoming race.
Huntington was not signed up to race but had been training near Shaktoolik after the withdrawal of another team from the race.If he had entered he would have been a serious contender for the win this year.
