In an escalation in the conflict involving Syria, Israel launched airstrikes against its northern neighbor after the third bomb attack in three weeks that occurred on Tuesday.
It is believed the bomb attacks on Israel’s northern border are retaliation for recent attacks by the Israelis on suspected weapons convoys and warehouses in Syrian territory. This attack on Israel comes less than a month after Israel carried out an airstrike against Hezbollah along the Lebanon-Syrian border. The bomb set off near an Israeli patrol along the fence separating the two countries, critically injured one Israeli soldier and caused injuries to another three.
Israel retaliated for the bomb attack with an airstrike on a Syrian training facility, military headquarters and batteries of artillery on the Syrian side of the Golan Heights on Wednesday. Although the retaliation was for the bomb attack, it is not believed that Syrians set off that bomb.
Suspicions are directed at Hezbollah. But, Israel said that Syria is responsible, stating, “We hold the Assad regime responsible for what happens in its territory and if it continues to collaborate with terrorists striving to hurt Israel, then we will keep on exacting a heavy price from it and make it regret its actions.”
Syria reports that one soldier was killed in the airstrike and another seven were wounded.
The General Command of Syrian Army and Armed Forces says however, that the airstrikes were instead a diversion to take away attention from the Syrian government’s recent successes against the rebel forces in its country. Syria re-captured the sity of Yabroud, north of Damascus this weekend.
The Golan Heights, near where the airstrike took place, is a highly contentious area. It was seized from Syria by Israel in the 1967 war. Syria moved to re-take it in 1973, but was thwarted by Israeli forces.
