KIVALINA,Alaska-Yesterday, Sunday, January 29, at approximately 3 o'clock in the afternoon, Alaska State troopers were notified by the Kivalina village police officers that a stabbing had occurred in the village.
At approximately 7:10 PM Sunday evening, Alaska State troopers arrived at the community and began their investigation. That investigation showedthat on Saturday, at approximately 10 PM, an intoxicated Rhonda Norton stabbed another adult household member in the back as they were preparing the children lead the house. Another family member managed to restrain Norton while the stabbing victim crawled from the residence. Once outside, the victim collapsed. Family members helped get the stabbing victim to the local clinic.
Continuing bad weather in the area hampered efforts to medevac the victim from the village. It wasn’t until approximately 3 PM on Sunday, that the weather cleared enough to arrange a medevac to Maniilaq Medical Health Center. Once there, the victim was treated for serious injuries sustained as a result of the stabbing.
As a result of their investigation, Alaska State troopers arrested Norton on charges of Assault I(DV) Assault III(DV) and Assault IV(DV) and transported her to a temporary holding facility in Kotzebue, where she awaits arraignment.
As of today, the victim is currently in stable condition in Kotzebue’s Maniilaq Medical Health Center.
