At about 8:52 pm Thursday evening, Alaska State Troopers responded to the Kodiak USCG base barracks for a report of a suicide.
Their investigation at the scene found that 21-year-old Christopher Castillo had killed himself sometime in the afternoon of Thursday. USCG police discovered Casstillo’s body after his co-workers were unable to locate him.

During the early morning hours of Tuesday, at approximately 5 am, the USCG Military Police notified the Alaska State Troopers of another death at at USCG Housing on the Coast Guard Base.
The trooper investigation found that 26-year-old Johnathan Van Neil had committed suicide sometime earlier this morning.
The troopers found no foul play was involved in the incident, but believe alcohol to be a factor in Van Neil’s death.
Like the remains of Castillo, Van Neil’s remains are being transferred to the State Medical Examiner’s office in Anchorage for autopsy.
Next of kin for both victims have been notified.
