A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck Burma today killed at least 12 people, collapsed a bridge and a gold mine and hit small towns close to the epicenter hard.
The quake struck at 7:42 am Burma local time.
Burma’s state television has warned residents to stay away from higgh walls, old buildings and buildings with visible damage to them. The station also warned residents of aftershocks that are sure to come. A 5.8 aftershock has already struck.

Sintku township suffered the most casualties at 6 dead and 11 injured. Some of those killed and injured were at the gold mine that collapsed near that township. Athough tthere have been reports of other mines collapsing in the region, none of them could be confirmed.
Another two people were killed and 16 injured when a bridge collapsed on the Irrawaddy River east of Shwebo. That information coming from the local government there. That bridge was under construction and nearly 80% complete.
Earthquakes occur in Burma reletively often. A powerful earthquake hit Burma in 2011 killing 75 people.
