Legislative funding leads to new station, increased safety for Northeast neighborhoods

On Saturday, the Northeast Anchorage legislative delegation will attend the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Muldoon Fire Station #6 in East Anchorage. Senator Bill Wielechowski and Representatives Max Gruenberg and Pete Petersen secured $6 million in state backing for this project in 2010. Replacing the outdated Fire Station #6 building has long been a top priority for the Northeast Anchorage area, and, as stated in the Municipality of Anchorage’s press release, the new station will be a “symbol of pride for years to come.”

“The new Muldoon Fire Station will cut response times and save lives, and it will help our firefighters better protect Northeast Anchorage neighborhoods now and as Anchorage continues to grow,” Rep. Petersen said.

The new Muldoon Fire Station #6 is 13,900 square feet, almost double the size of the old station, and it has four apparatus bays for emergency vehicles and 10 dorm rooms. The Legislature had previously voted to fund the project in 2008, but it was vetoed by Governor Sarah Palin.

“This was a real team effort to get to this day,” said Rep. Gruenberg. “It’s exciting to see all the hard work by the community and everyone involved pay off with a wonderful new facility that will benefit East Anchorage for decades.”

“This fire station has been a top priority for our community for many years,” Sen. Wielechowski added. “It will make East Anchorage much safer. I am glad we were able to work with the community to secure the funding for it at the state level.”
