The lone survivor of a boating accident on Friday, November 23rd, the day after Thanksgiving did not long survive his brush with death. The man, 26-year-old Juneau man, Jim Brown Jr. died in a North Douglas home early Monday morning. The cause of his death is still unknown.
No foul play is suspected but alcohol was involved in Brown’s death. He was found unconscious and not breathing by three people from a group of about ten people that were at the residence at the time. The three performed CPR on Brown, but he did not respond to their attempts to resuscitate him. It was reported that Brown was found in the bathroom where he had apparently fallen. When discovered, he had a small laceration to his forehead.
Police and medical personnel were called to the scene after Brown’s dicovery. EMS arrived at 11:49pm, police got there at 12:01am, Brown was declared deceased at 12:29am.
Brown was one of three people in an 18-foot Lund skiff that capsized about a half-mile from shore near Tenekee Springs in Southeast Alaska on November 23. The three had been returning from a hunting trip from across the inlet. Brown was the only survivor of the sinking that claimed the lives of two others. Juneau brothers 26-year-old Casey Newman and 23-year-old Kelly Newman drowned in the unfortunate incident which was reported to have been caused by a wave over the Stern of the skiff. Brown alone was able to swim to shore.

After finding a local resident, Brown contacted the Coast Guard and the helicopter crew was sent from Sitka to search for the two brothers. Local volunteers on fishing boats responded to the scene as well. The volunteers were able to locate Kelly Newman in the water, but two hours of resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful.
The Coast Guard helicopter sent to the scene that Friday was unable to locate Casey Newman. Another Coast Guard helicopter resumed the search on Saturday morning, it too met no success. Using divers and underwater cameras, Casey Newman was located and retrieved by divers on that Saturday afternoon.
Juneau police have requested an autopsy in Brown’s death to determine cause. His body will be sent to the state Medical Examiner’s Office in Anchorage.
Brown’s next of kin have been notified.
