A long-time victim of the flaws in the country's justice system was set free after almost 30 years behind bars on Louisiana's death row. Glenn Ford was set free on Tuesday.
Ford is one of the longest serving inmates on death row in the country, and was the longest serving in Louisiana. He was freed on Tuesday after prosecutors petitioned the court for his release on Monday after new evidence proved that he was where he said he was at at the time that Isadore Rozeman was murdered on November 5, 1983.
The Capital Post Conviction Project stated that Ford’s conviction of the 1983 slaying was due to the unconstitutional suppression of evidence as well as the inexperience of Ford’s counsel. Some of that evidence concerned a suppressed police report that related to the time of the crime as well as evidence involving the murder weapon.
But, the most exonerating evidence was the confession of a confidential informant, Jake Robinson, who admitted that he pulled the trigger that killed Rozeman.
Ford had done occasional yard work for Rozeman. But Ford’s attorneys say the new evidence corroborates his claim that he was not present or involved in Rozeman’s death.
Ford was convicted of first degree murder for the death of Rozeman, who was a jeweler and watchmaker in Shreveport, he was convicted by an all-white jury.
Exiting the Louisiana State Penitentiary in Angola Tuesday, Ford said “it feels good” to be free. Asked if he harbors any resentment for his wrongful imprisonment, he said, “Yeah, because I was locked up almost 30 years. For something I didn’t do.” He said when he went to prison, his sons were babies. Now, they are grown men, with babies of their own.
Louisiana law provides for settlements of up to $25,000 per year with a maximum of $250,000 for inmates that served time but are later exonerated. The law also provides for an additional $80,000 for the loss of life opportunities.
Ford was incarcerated at Angola Prison, Angola Prison is one of the largest prisons in the world. The prison houses two death row units. There are over 80 inmates currently on death row in that facility.
