Joseph Picklo, age 29 of Dallas, Pennsylvania, told authorities that he he had "fooled around" with the fireworks and other materials and forgot he had them in his backpack when he attempted to board the flight.
Picklo, who described himself as a self-employed salesman who “likes to conduct experiments with explosives” was arrested yesterday when he tried to board a flight to San Fransisco from Philadelphia.
Picklo was detained during screening when a suspicious device was discovered in his backpack. The device was described as two homemade M80s, a plastic bottle wrapped in electrical tape, and partially filled with a powdery mixture, and a testube filled with another powdery substance which included a wick. A lighter was also found in the pack.
FBI officials say that Picklo has no known ties to terrorism or terrorist groups. He was arrested by the Philadelphia police department and then turned over to federal authorities.
He appeared briefly in court yesterday and then again today. His next appearance in chambers will be on Tuesday. He will remain in custody at least until that time. Picklo faces federal charges of of attempting to carry an explosive device onto an aircraft, which prosecutors said carries a penalty of up to 10 years in prison.
U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives spokesman Steven Bartholomew said the materials are being sent to its lab for analysis.
No flights were delayed during the incident but a bomb disposal unit did come in and inspect the device before an all clear was given. Passengers boarding flights were diverted to another gate.
