On Tuesday night, at 7:07 pm, Alaska State Troopers in Saint Marys were notified of an assault that had just taken place in Marshall.
According to reports, 34-year-old Leon Edwards Sr. of Marshall assaulted several members of his family. Edwards is accused of punching one female family member three times in the head with his fist.
After that assault, Edwards retrieved a firearm, which he threatened to use on the ten members of his family that were in the house. Family members chased him from the home.
A short time later, Edwards returned. This time he was armed with a machete, he once again threatened family members with it before cutting all communications to the house with the weapon. He was finally convinced to leave the residence.
At 8:25 pm, the same evening, the Mayor of Marshall called the Alaska State Troopers again. This time, it was reported that Edwards had barricaded himself in a shop near the residence and threatened to kill anyone who came near him.
Troopers from Saint Marys arrived in Marshall. At some point, Edwards had moved. Troopers tracked Edwards to a remote fishing camp on the Yukon River, where they found him hiding behind a tree.
At 10:23 pm, troopers took Edwards into custody without incident. He was charged with numerous counts of Assault 2,Assault 3, Assault 4, and Interfering with the reporting of a DV. He was transported to Bethel where he is being held on no bail.
As the troopers investigated the incident further, more reports of assault from Edwards began to surface.
The investigation is continuing.
Marshall is a community of approximately 400 people. The town is located on the north bank of Polte Slough north of Arbor Island, on the east bank of the Yukon River.
