The Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, located in Fairfield County, Connecticut is the scene of a horrific mass killing this morning. 18 children and 8 adults are among those believed dead. The school teaches grades Kindergarten through fourth grade.

A 911 call went into the State police at 9:41am this morning reporting the shooting at the school. That call also reported that the children were trapped in the classroom with the gunman. Over 100 shots are reported to have rung out at the 626-student school.

“It sounded like someone was kicking a door,” stated one of the young students who witnessed the shooting. The boy was actually getting shot at outside of a classroom when a teacher, yet to be identified, saved his life by yanking him into the classroom.

In addition to the 18 young children, unconfirmed reports say that the school’s principal as well as the school’s psychologist are those among the dead in the deadly shooting spree. Several people have been evacuated to the hospital.

Although it was reported that the gunman was the father of one of the children attending the school.The 20-year-old shooter, yet to be identified, was announced dead in the school. It is still unknown whether the gunman committed suicide or was killed by police enforcement.

“Local police officials are giving out very little details for now about the number of causualities and their ages because their main concern is to give it to the families,” stated a live news reporter of the shooting on BBC News.
FBI is currently on the scene assisting local law enforcement and will not update the media at this time.

A reverse 911 call went out to the parents of children enrolled in the school shortly after the deadly incident.

The president was informed of the murders by Homeland Security advisor John Brennon. President Obama called the Newtown Mayor and gave his condolences to the family and community. He also spoke to FBI to see what sort of security practices the elementary school had.

Sandy Hook School is in Newton, Connecticut which is approximatey 60 miles northeast of New York City.

Today’s shooting is one of the deadliest in U.S. history.

UPDATE:

Earlier friday morning law enforcement sources believed the gunman to be 24-year-old Ryan Lanza, whose mother worked at the Newtown Elementary school. Later this afternoon, investigators discovered that the shooter is in fact 20-year-old Adam Lanza, which is believed to be the brother of Ryan. So far, Ryan appears to be missing.

Officials believe that Adam wasn’t the only gunman involved in the shooting and the second gunman is currently being held in custody. The second gunman’s identity so far has not been released.

Law enforcement stated that one of the first people killed in the shooting was the Lanza brothers’ mother, who was a kindergarden teacher at the school and many of the young victims killed were her students.
