Missing Kasilof Man’s Kayak Found Capsized in Cook Inlet

A capsized kayak, fitting the description of the kayak used by a Kasilof man, who was the subject of an extensive search after being reported missing was recovered by the trooper patrol vessel Augustine on Wednesday afternoon about one mile off-shore in Cook Inlet.

Found near the capsized kayak, was a life jacket. It was located approximately 300  yards from the kayak by Alaska Wildlife Troopers.

It was just under six hours into the search, at 4:20 pm, that the Kayak was retrieved from the Inlet. Family members of 38-year-old Kasilof man Leif Osmar reported Osmar missing at 10:50 am. The family members found his truck parked near his family’s fish camp near South Coho on Tuesday at approximately 4:30 pm.

The family told troopers that the 13 foot two-tone blue and white kayak was also not accounted for.

It is believed that Osmar had gone out kayaking sometime between 8 am and 4 pm on Tuesday. After Osmar was reported missing, a trooper helicopter was launched to search the Kasilof River as well as the waters adjacent in Cook Inlet.
