ANCHORAGE – August 15, 2016 – Municipal Light & Power warns customers to be aware of a reported utility scam. As a part of the scam, ML&P customers have received a call from an individual who states they work for ML&P or Chugach Electric Association. The individual asks the customer to immediately settle a delinquent ML&P account by providing payment over the phone or by obtaining a money order from a local retailer.
Some reports suggest the scammers are impersonating ML&P on Caller ID and are using this call-back number: 844-255-4708. ML&P asks customers to hang up on suspicious calls and dial the utility at 907-263-5340 or 888-999-5340 to verify their account information or to report suspicious contact.
At no time will an ML&P employee threaten a customer with disconnection without immediate payment. ML&P disconnects are done in accordance with the utility’s tariff regulations. Regulations for discontinuing service include written notice when bills are past due, along with other attempts to contact the customer to notify them that their bill is past due – either by phone or door hanger.[xyz-ihs snippet=”adsense-body-ad”]
At no time will an ML&P employee direct a customer to make a same-day payment at a third-party retailor. For a same-day payment in person, utility Customer Service representatives will direct customers to visit ML&P’s Customer Service office at 1120 East 1st Avenue in Anchorage.
Customers should be aware of utility scams and are asked to contact an ML&P Customer Service representative for questions regarding an account or account notice. For ML&P customers, the Customer Service contacts are:
- Phone: 907-263-5340
- ML&P toll-free number: 888-999-5340
