At the end of the burn of the first stage of the three stage rocket, North Korea's attempt at a satellite launch failed once again.
After 100 seconds in the air, the second stage of North Korea’s Unha-3 rocket failed to ignite and the rocket’s first-stage plunged into the Yellow Sea. The rest of the rocket continued on with only momentum to power it until it exploded as it re-entered the atmosphere.
This was the fourth attempt to place a satellite into orbit by the impoverished nation, and it was met with the same amount of success as the previous three.
Experts say that the country could have fed its entire population for a year with what it spent on this last failed rocket attempt. It also threw away 240,000 metric tons of food aid from the United States when it went ahead with the launch.
The plans for the launch were mewt with concern by the United States and other countries. North Korea was warned by Russia and the United States to not go through with their plans. Paek Chang Ho, the head of the North Korean satellite control center told those gathered to to watch the launch there, “We don’t really care about the opinions from the outside. This is critical in order to develop our national economy.”
Two South Korean Destroyers, along with helicopters are combing the sea in the area where the debris fell. American Minesweepers and other vessels are also in the area.
If North Korea stays true to form, the world can expect a nuclear detonation to take place in that country in the near future as it has done after previous failed launches.
American analyst, the president of Pacific Forum CSIS says, “This failure makes it even more likely that the North will now attempt a nuclear test in the not-too-distant future,” He continued by saying, “The rocket launch was supposed to demonstrate the regime’s power and technical prowess. A nuclear test may now be seen as even more necessary, not just to further perfect their weapons capability, but also to save face.”
