A Kiana man is behind bars and facing two Felony counts after shooting four dogs belonging to his mother earlier this month according to KNOM in Nome. 42-year-old Carl Henry Jr. was arrested earlier this week on Felony charges of Criminal Mischief and Cruelty to Animals. He also has one misdemeanor charge of Assault leveled at him.
Henry’s mother said that Henry showed up at her cabin 23 miles east of Kotzebue intoxicated at about 7:30 pm on April 9th and got in a fight with her after she called him a drunk. After the argument, Henry’s mother left the cabin.
Henry and a friend continued drinking and Henry, who was intoxicated, according to reports, got agitated over the dogs who were barking nearby.
According to the man, who had been drinking with Henry at the time of the incident, and was interviewed by troopers later that night, an enraged Henry fired shots in the air in an attempt to shut the dogs up. When that failed, according to the witness, Henry shot the animals. The witness said Henry shot the animals because Henry’s mother had called him a drunk.
When Henry’s mother returned later to feed her dogs, she found that four of them were gone. Henry’s mother told troopers that Henry drug the dogs off with his snow machine after killing them. Concerned that Henry would return, she walked two miles to Camp Ivik to phone the troopers.
Because Henry was no longer at the scene when troopers arrived at 11:30 pm that night to investigate the incident, a warrant was issued for his arrest.
It wasn’t until Monday of this week that Henry was located in Koyuk and placed under arrest. After his arrest, Henry was transported and remanded to the Anvil Mountain Correctional Center and his bail was set at $2,500 and a Court Approved Third Party Custodian.
Court records show that Henry was arraigned on Wednesday afternoon on the charges and appointed a Public Defender. His next court date is May 30th.
