Early on Thursday morning, the United States Coast Guard notified the Alaska State Troopers of a fatal boating accident in Elfin Cove on Chichagof Island in Southeast Alaska, the trooper dispatch revealed today.
Although the details of the accident are few, the USCG relayed that one person was killed when a small skiff carrying two adults and three juveniles, struck an underwater obstacle while traveling near the cove, ejecting several into the water.
One person, 44-year-old Elizabeth Eskelin, did not survive the incident.
The four other occupants were transported by the Coast Guard to Juneau for medical treatment.
Eskelin’s next of kin were notified in this on-going investigation.
UPDATE: The original report blamed an underwater object for the accident. Newer reports from USCG report that the 16-foot skiff collided with a piling. The Coast Guard responded to the scene via MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter.
