According to the report, 56-year-old Michael Shroaeder of Anchorage tried to put his 1946 PA-12 down on a gravel bar on the Kanektok River. He was landing there near a fishing guide camp. He had one passenger on board, 46-year-old Fred Tellen of Kenai.
The planned landing went awry however, and the aircraft struck the riverbank instead.
Both the pilot and the passenger were wearing safety belt and harnesses and were uninjured in the crash.
The same cannot be said of the PA-12, it sustained heavy damage in the crash and is likely to be declared a total loss.
