Republican Candidate for the Presidency, Mitt Romney, met with former Polish President Lech Walesa today in the last country on Romney's three-country tour.
Romney took a private meeting with the former president. The press was allowed in at the tail end of the meeting and reporters overheard Walensa telling Romney “I wish you to be successful because this success is needed to the United States, of course, but to Europe and the rest of the world, too. Gov. Romney, get your success – be successful!”

It wasn’t expected that Walesa would back Obama in the upcoming presidential race. There has been bad relations between Obama and Walesa that showed themselves during the President’s trip to Poland in 2011. Walesa told reporters at that time that he would not meet with Obama, saying, “I won’t meet him, it doesn’t suit me.”
The current leadership of the NSZZ Solidarity movement, which has backed the Democrats and U.S. unions, backed away from Walesa’s remarks to Romney.
In a release to the press, the current head of the movement said, “In relation to Lech Walesa’s meeting with Mitt Romney … I wish to inform that NSZZ ‘Solidarnosc’ is in no way involved in the organization of this meeting nor had the initiative to invite Mitt Romney to Poland,” Andrzej Adamczyk, the head of the union’s international department, said in a statement.
“Regretfully, we have learned from our friends in the American trade union central AFL-CIO representing over 12 million workers about Mitt Romney’s support for the attacks against trade unions and labor rights. In this respect, I wish to express, on behalf of the president of NSZZ ‘Solidarnosc’ Piotr Duda, our solidarity with American workers and trade unions. NSZZ ‘Solidarnosc’ will always support the AFL-CIO in their struggle for the right of workers to organize and bargain collectively.”
