The war in Afghanistan, that began as Operation Enduring Freedom, which was started by President George W Bush in 2001 following the attacks of 9-11, has become the most unpopular war in U.S. history according to a poll by CNN and ORC International.
The war in Afghanistan has surpassed the Vietnam War in its unpopularity and garners an approval rating of only 17%. That number has plummeted and is a far cry from the 52% approval rating the war had just four years ago.
The majority of the American public in the poll agree with President Obama’s decision to remove U.S. troops from Afghanistan, and mirrors a poll done by the Washington Post and ABC News that says most Americans do not believe the war is worth fighting.
82% of the people polled are in opposition to the war in Afghanistan, that number is almost double the number five years ago that sat at 46% in 2008.
57% of poll respondants agree that the war in Afghanistan is going badly for the U.S. and more than half believe that U.S. troops should be taken out of that country sooner than the deadline that is now less than a year away. An Associated Press/GfK survey says that over half of their respondants think that the withdrawal from Afghanistan is going too slow and want a faster pace taken up. That poll also showed that most Americans believe that the U.S. did the wrong thing by going in to Afghanistan.
The CNN poll took place between December 16-19 and polled 1,035 adults nation-wide. The Associated Press survey was conducted between December 5-9 and polled 1,367 adults.
