Rick Santorum put an end to his attempts to capture the GOP nomination for president today.
He said at a press conference at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, “We made a decision over the weekend that while this presidential race for us is over for me, and we will suspend our campaign effective today, we are not done fighting,”
Although he has now suspended his run, he did not announce an endorsement for the front-runner Mitt Romney. He did say that he would help the Republicans claim the Senate in the Fall.
Earlier this morning, his campaign said that he was not leaving the race when he cancelled morning campaign events. Instead, the campaign said that he was cancelling the morning events so that his family could settle in at home. His daughter Bella was just released from the hospital after becoming ill over the weekend.
In the end, Santorum was the only competitor to give any sort of challenge to Mitt Romney, the fore-runner in the GOP Primaries. Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul still remain in the race, but hold no threat to Romney.
Pulling out of the race before going head to head with Romney in Pennsylvania could have possibly been the best move for Santorum. After fighting a strong race, Santorum’s political star may still be on the rise.
