BAJA CALIFORNIA-The search for the remaining victims of the capsized tourist vessel east of Mexico's Baja California peninsula today. More than 40 people were aboard the ill-fated vessel. Although there are discrepancies as to how many were aboard. Mexican authorities put the number at 43, while the Coast Guard puts the number at 44.

The vessel, M/V Erik, is a 115 foot fishing vessel with a 24 foot beam. The vessel was equipped with stabilizer poles and according to the Baja Sportfishing Inc. website was able to handle turbulent seas, such as the North Sea, the region the vessel was built for.

According to reports, the full 16 man crew of the “Erik” survived the incident. A spokesman for the Coast Guard, Petty Officer 2nd class Henry Dunphy stated,”They ran into some bad weather, capsized, the boat sank,” the Erik sank in the Sea of Cortez at approximately 2:30 in the afternoon Sunday. Several of the people from the vessel swam to shore, and walked to the nearest town where they alerted the Mexican Navy of the incident.

There is one confirmed fatality from the sinking at this time. That fatality was an American tourist. His name is unavailable. Meanwhile, the search continues, with authorities unsure as to how many people are missing. Dora Winkler, a spokesman for the Captain of the Port of San Felipe have announced seven people still missing. The Coast Guard has that number at eight.

All further trips by the company involved have been cancelled.
