
The search north of Kotzebue continues for a man lost when a trio of vehicles broke through the ice Saturday morning.
According to troopers, they were notiifiied at 11:20 am Saturday morning that three men, while on a snowmachine and two four-wheelers plunged through the ice near Lockhart Point. They had been on a hunting trip.
Prior to AST being notified, multiple local EMT personnel and local community members rendered aid to Brown and initiated a search for the missing man, Bergman Nelson.
The Northwest Arctic Borough Search and Rescue and Kotzebue Fire Department would respond to the scene to assist in the search for Nelson.
One of the three safely made it to shore on his own. A second, Brown, was rescued by searchers and medical personnel and transported to the Maniilaq health clinic. Unfortunately, that victim, 46-year-old Elmer Brown Sr would succuumb and pass away at the clinic a short time later.
Brown’s next of kin was notified of his passing.
Authorites warn the public to stay off of the saltwater ice in the area.
