The National Guard, Coast Guard, Sitka Mountain Rescue Personnel and others are continuing the search for 13-year-old Makayla McRoberts who has been missing from Port Protection since yesterday.
The young Port Protection girl went missing yesterday after she went for a hike near the boardwalk at the end of Port Protection Road. Makayla, the young girl, was to have returned home at 5 pm yesterday evening. When she did not return by late evening, the Alaska State Troopers in Ketchikan were called and informed of her missing status at 9:32 pm.
Makayla was last seen wearing a brown hooded sweatshirt and Levis. She did not take anything else with her. The young girl is fairly new to Alaska and it is reported that she is unfamiliar with the area.
This morning, at about 7:30 am, a search was launched for Makayla after friends aand family failed to locate her.
The Ketchikan Volunteer Rescue Squad, Klawock Volunteer Rescue Squad and a number of volunteers from Port Protection are on the ground searching for her. More searchers from KVRS arrived in the afternoon with search dogs as well. personnel from Sitka and Juneau have also joined in the search.
The Coast Guard also has assets in the area, an MH-60 Jayhawk with FLIR is searching the location from the air. The Army National Guard is also on the scene from Juneau with a Blackhawk helicopter.
Local air assets from Klawock are unable to fly the area due to weather, and vehicle access into the area is not possible due to heavy snow pack.
