Yesterday afternoon at 3:29pm, the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office recieved a 9-1-1 call reporting a shooter at the Clackamas Town Center in Clackamas, on the outskirts of Portland, Oregon. That 185-store mall is the largest in the Portland area.
Within a minute of the in-coming report, the first officers arrived on the scene. As other officers from local, city, state and federal law enforcement arrived on the scene, the different departments initiated “active shooter protocol,” a technique put together on short notice, where teams from different agencies team up to engage a threat.

Their training was never called on as the officers at the scene never engaged the gunman.
According to the report issued by the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office, just before the attacks began, the gunman, now identified as 22-year-old Jacob Tyler Roberts, parked his vehicle in the mall’s south parking lot near Macy’s.
After entering Macy’s, Roberts, now wearing a hockey style mask and carrying a large amount of ammunition, moved north through the store towards the food court. It was just outside Macy’s that he announced himself, saying, “I am the shooter,” and opened fire with an AR-15 semi-automatic assault rifle. He sprayed the area with weapons-fire and fatally wounded two people, 54-year-old Portland resident Cindy Ann Yuille and 45-year-old West Linn resident Steven Matthew Forsyth.
As what is estimated to be about 20 gunshots rang out over the mall’s Christmas music, Santas, Christmas shoppers and employees fled the area or hid behind store displays.
Also wounded in the attack was a 15-year-old juvenile, Kristina Shevchenko. Shevchenko managed to escape the scene through an exit from the mall near the REI store. Law Enforcement personnel found her there and rendered assistance.

Part of Roberts’ deadly attack was captured on the mall’s surveillance cameras.
After his attack, Roberts moved east past the Macy’s home store and into a service stairwell according to reports. Using the stairwell, Roberts moved down onto the lower level of the mall. It was there that the gunman took his own life according to authorities.
The police have not yet uncovered a motive for the deadly incident. Search warrants were issued, and police went to the shooters home. The results of those warrants were not made known to the public. So far, police have not found a connection between Roberts and the people that he shot. Authorities believe that Roberts was not targeting anyone specific and the shootings were random.
The mall is expected to remain closed until at least late today.
