The early morning fire on McCarrey Street in east Anchorage early Friday morning that took the life of 24-year-old Michael Gonzales has netted a suspect.

The fire at 201 McCarrey Street Apartment B-7 Friday morning was immediately considered suspicious by authorities. Anchorage Police Department homicide detectives and Crime scene investigators were brought in to investigate the incident. After a preliminary investigation, the fire was determined to be arson.
18 other units in the building were evacuated after the blaze. Some of the residents of those units were transported to local hospitals for medical attention for smoke inhalation.
Police announced yesterday that they had a suspect in custody. It is reported that they arrested 25 year-old Gina Virilio on charges of First Degree Murder, First Degree Arson, Second Degree Arson, Criminal Mischief in the Third Degree, Reckless Endangerment, and Assault in the FOurth Degree.
According to police, they believe that Virgilio threw gasoline on the sleeping Gonzales, set him on fire, and left the scene on early Friday morning.
The two, Gonzales and Virgilio were room-mates in the apartment.
