After having been in session since January 26th, 1959, Alaska’s very first legislature gavelled out on April 16th, 1959. Alaska had just been admitted to the Union after President Eisenhower signed a special proclamation.

Presiding over the Senate was Senate President William E Beltz of Unalakleet. His House counterpart was Speaker Warren A Taylor of Fairbanks.
