Syria has been using chemical weapons in the last month against on their own people according to Israel.
That accusation came from General Itai Brun, Israel’s research commander for Israel’s Intelligence Directorate during a security conference in Tel Aviv on Tuesday. Citing observations from various images of the victims, the general stated, “Shrunken pupils, foaming at the mouth and other signs indicate, in our view, that lethal chemical weapons were used.” He indicated that the agent was probably Sarin. The general told the conference, “To the best of our professional understanding, the regime made use of lethal chemical weapons against militants in a number of incidents in recent months, including the relatively better-known incident from March 19.” No images were produced by the general however.

The international community is of the general consensus that Syria has large stockpiles of chemical weapons. On March 19th, rebels accused the Assad regime of using chemical weapons in an aerial attack in the province of Aleppo, the Syrian government denied this allegation however, and blamed the Syrian rebels for the attack.
A second Israeli official echoed the general’s remarks and also stated that the Syrian regime has used chemical weapons at least five times in the last month. Britain and France has stated that they had credible evidence that Syria has used the weapon on more than one occasion this year. They related this information to the United Nations. This latest from Israel carries more weight in that Israel has the best intelligence network inside Syria of any country.
The announcement at the conference comes as Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel is wrapping up is three day visit to Israel. Israel did not share this information with the secretary during his visit according to an un-named senior U.S. official.
During his visit to Israel last month, President Obama said that the use of chemical weapons by the Syrian regime would be a “game-changer.” The U.S. is currently stating that the reports of use of these weapons has not yet been confirmed. Pentagon spokesman George Little said that there was no change on the official line, but said that they continue to assess the reports. He did say that the use of chemical weapons would be “unacceptable.”
